Why E-bikes Are So Reliable
I just love this video. Two days ago I was changing my own from a fat bike motor to one more traditional. This is how the inside of my own torque sensing mid-drive looks.
As you can see, there isn’t anything to go wrong! A small motor, the size of my fist, turns a helical gear against another made of nylon (for noise canceling). Two more gears, all supported by large, sealed bearings, and power is applied to your chain ring. When was the last time you had an electric motor actually wear out? These are just so much more simple and reliable than any internal combustion engine. There really is no comparison. The low price is just a bonus!
Each and every part you see I can replace for about $100 (assuming I can’t repair it or that it doesn’t just need a new bearing). Few e-bike motors are more complicated. Hub drive motors are even more simple! Unless there is a mfg defect, likely to show up quickly, warrenty work is usually related to traditional bike repairs. Any single speed coaster brake I have ever overhauled is more complex.
Nearly all my customers ride their e-bikes far more than they ever rode traditional bikes. Their average length per ride is double. Even so, I get no more service or warrenty repairs because the “e” portion of the bike itself is really that reliable.
