Touring Cyclist Etiquette
This is one of my favorite podcasts. They are ALL about practical cycling. So much of what they have to say applies to our local MUPs and Rail Trails. As it becomes easier and easier to travel with bikes, proper etiquette will become a bigger deal. More and more of us are taking our bikes on the train and riding in Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City and Rail Trails all over. Many communities have more strict regulations than us and often they are far better enforced. We would all do well to learn their rules and plan to follow them.
I may have mentioned it earlier. If so, I apologize. Just the other day a representative called me asking what to do about speeding on the local paths here in The Quad Cities. He is getting overwhelmed with complaints from pedestrians that feel they can no longer walk safely. I mentioned that one of the biggest problems is that Strava refuses to remove MUPs as competitive segments. People can still record their rides, but racing for KOM status on Multi-Use Paths is unconscionable. Will they be sued if someone is killed?
This gentleman and I discussed the fact that many illegal e-bikes are being ridden at break neck speeds. He really didn’t know what to think. He expected me to defend them. When asked what we.need to do, I suggested signs with the 15mph speed limit (we had them once upon a time). I also explained that illegal e-bikes, without throttle, aren’t much fun to ghost pedal. Outlawing throttles will go a long way towards getting speeds, when passing pedestrians, under control. Yeah, I know that is not a popular suggestion, but you know, persons who can’t pedal can register to get personal mobility devices. They certainly don’t need to be going 30mph.
This gentleman asked how they might enforce rules. A great start is to post the rules. Peer pressure with that back-up can go a long way. I told him that Parks Departments and Conservation Officers can generate much needed cash handling enforcement. I mean, our police can’t control their own cars on the street. They sure aren’t going to enforce path rules!
I get it. My ideas aren’t popular. People don’t like rules and do not want to consider anyone but themselves.. The fact is, we should not allow the importation of any bike, motor or kit that does not fit the three class e-bike system (we require homologazation for every other vehicle). We should have adopted the far more strict E.U. rules. People say they don’t need to speed, but ALL I have known do so anyway.
We tried the honor system with automobiles. It has been such a disaster that people feel the need to escape to remote Multi-Use Paths and Rail Trails. We have only ourselves to blame. We finally have a means to really enjoy bicycles well in to old age and it just wasn’t good enough. Please, consider joining me in keeping the chaos off of our Lanes, Paths and Trails.
